This is one of the forms of monument conservation provided for in the Act on monument protection and care of 23 July 2003 and the only form that protects monuments in area – rather than in a point-based manner. The cultural park is a relatively new institution in Polish law and was incorporated into law upon the Act coming into force. The cultural park protects the cultural landscape and is intended to contribute to the preservation of an area with distinctive landscape values with immovable monuments characteristic for the local building and settlement tradition. They may be established by municipal councils, which should define the principles of the park’s operation, such as the conservation method, as well as establish bans and restrictions applicable within it’s boundaries. In connection with the park’s establishment, the owners of real estate may receive compensation for any limitation in the manner of using the real estate or demand the purchase of their real estate by virtue of an agreement, if the establishment of a park imposes restrictions on them or causes their inability to possess the real estate as previously. Currently, this form of monument protection is not often used in practice (38 cultural parks were established in Poland as of 10 July 2019).
