KPSW, Kujawsko–Pomorska Szkoła Wyższa w Bydgoszczy DOI: 10.53024/9.4.44.2021 URL: https://www.kssip.gov.pl/pobierz_plik/09_kutta.pdf SUMMARY: This essay presents the life story of Ludwik Karol Wirski (1872-1961), a lawyer, graduate of Lvov University, prosecutor in Przemyśl, who, at the call of the Ministry of the former Prussian Quarter (1919-1922), arrived in Poznań at the end of 1919 to take up the management of the Prosecutor’s Office at the District Court in Grudziądz in Vistula Pomerania in 1920. He quickly took over the management of this body and led it „gloriously”. In 1924, he was transferred to Bydgoszcz, also to the position of a prosecutor at the District Court there, and held it until 1928. In circumstances that remain unexplained, he retired. From 1928 until the German invasion of Poland in 1939, he practiced as an attorney on the list of lawyers of the Bar Association in Poznań. His chambers were located in the city centre, and Wirski was one of the most successful barristers. After the Germans occupied Bydgoszcz, attorney Wirski remained in the city. Despite the threats and repression, he did not enroll in the Caucasian-Armenian nationality group privileged by the occupier. He also did not apply for registration in Group III of the German national list. Secret teaching of children and youth was conducted in his flat. Wirski’s attitude as a Pole during the occupation was considered exemplary after the war. In 1945, after liberation of Bydgoszcz from the German occupation, L. Wirski was once again authorised by the Polish authorities to temporarily organize the court and prosecutor’s office and to manage the Prosecutor’s Office at the District Court. He quickly organized it and managed it without complaint for less than a year. After his retirement, he took up working again as an attorney belonging to the Voivodship Bar Association in Bydgoszcz, which he performed until 1961. Ludwik Wirski was an extraordinary person, his attitude and deeds made a lasting mark on the city of Bydgoszcz.
